Agate Beach

Agate Beach Gooseberry Falls

When most people think of Gooseberry Falls State Park, they think of the well-known falls that reside within the park. Though we certainly think the falls are incredibly beautiful, we also think the falls undermine another gem in the park: Agate Beach.

Agate Beach is found at the mouth of the Gooseberry River, where the water from the river meets the shore of Lake Superior. As its name suggests, the beach is a great spot for searching for prized Lake Superior Agates.

One of the most beautiful things about the beach, besides its intrinsic beauty, is the ever-changing beach and sandbar. Each season affects the formation differently. Melting snow in the spring results in a heavy flow of forceful water flowing down the river whipping out the sandbar. Calmer summer weather builds up the sandbar and fall’s powerful storms (and, of course winter’s beautiful ice formations) shift the rocks even more. Since the beach is constantly transforming you’ll likely feel like you’re on a new beach each time you visit.

After you’ve spent time at the beach, be sure to check out the Belle P. Cross anchor nearby and the Picnic Flow, a bed of ancient rock formed by lava over a billion years ago. Log and stone picnic tables build by the Civilian Conservation Corps are available on the rock and in surrounding areas.

To get to the beach, drive to Gooseberry Falls State Park (around 13 miles north of Two Harbors on MN-61). Take a right into the park and follow the signs down to the lakeshore parking area. After parking, continue by walking down to the mouth of the Gooseberry River.

Cascade Falls

Tuesday, June 14th, 2016

Cascade Falls State ParkWhat a coincidence! The first waterfall located on the Cascade River is called Cascade Falls. A short distance from the trailhead, this waterfall lies within a gorge filled with moss and ferns growing on black volcanic rock. As you follow the trail lined with birch, spruce, and white cedar, stop to see the views of Lake Superior along the way.

Located within the Cascade River State Park, the Cascade Falls is only the first of many waterfalls located within the park. The string of waterfalls located near the mouth of the river have been given the name “The Cascades”, which are very well known to many for their unique beauty. A quick hike up a well-maintained trail brings you to many overlooks and bridges that span the Cascades.

The Cascades are especially known for their fishing and fall colors, but double as a perfect spot to strap on your cross-country skis during the winter months. Plan a day to hike the trail and enjoy the area’s beauty, and maybe even take a dip in the crystal clear water.

TThings to do on the North Shoreo get to the Cascade Falls: Follow directions to Cascade River State Park. The falls are located one-third of a mile northeast of highway 61. Parking is at the mouth of the river

Note: If you have been to Cascade Falls in the past, you’ll likely notice a major change: the old cedar tree that grew in front of the waterfall has recently fallen. A new view of the falls has now opened up for visitors. Check out the change when you are there next!
