Sawtooth Mountains

Tuesday, March 1st, 2016

The Sawtooth Mountain Range stretches from the west side of Tofte to the east side of Grand Marais. It is made up of a number peaks, with the highest one reaching 900 feet over Lake Superior. While these peaks don’t rival other mountain ranges in height, the Sawtooth Mountain Range has a noteworthy silhouette. Looking at it from a distance, the peaks resemble the teeth of a saw with their uniform size, height and angles (hence the name Sawtooth Mountains).

The range was created by a combination of volcanic activity and erosion over the past billion years. Peaks include Carlton Peak, Leveaux Mountain, Oberg Mountain, Moose Mountain, Eagle Mountain, Murphy Mountain and Sawtooth Bluff.

Expect Better Early Seasons at Lutsen Mountains with New Snow Guns

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

This year Lutsen Mountains, the largest and tallest place to ski in mid-America, has added 32 new high-efficiency snow guns.  The addition of these snow machines will double their capacity for snow making in the early season, which will improve snow conditions and have more runs open earlier. Eachmachine  is equipped with its own mini weather station to adjust for current conditions. And these high efficiency units use less water and electricity while making more snow. Pretty cool!

I learned something new with the introduction of these snow guns. Machine-made snow, in many ways, is preferable to natural snow. When packed, 10 inches of natural snow adds only about an inch to the snow base whereas 10 inches of machine-made snow adds around 7 inches. So get your ski and snowboard equipment ready for the season and plan your trip now. You can even book your lodging and lift tickets together (and save a bundle!) with a Ski and Stay Package. You can book today on our website.

Hope to see you soon!
